Laboratory of Applied Preventive Veterinary Medicine
The Laboratory of Applied Preventive Veterinary Medicine (LMVPA) at FZEA/USP is located at FZEA-USP on the Pirassununga-SP Campus. The laboratory has been certified as biosafety level 2 by CTNBio since 2021 for carrying out activities involving the handling of level 2 genetically modified organisms.
The LMVPA has supported research related to emerging viruses and the activities of the RedeVírus-MCTI (https://redevirus.mcti.gov.br/), such as diagnosis and molecular research during health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic, monkeypox and avian influenza. As a highlight, the laboratory is part of the PREVIR-MCTI network, the national network for monitoring viruses in wild animals funded by CNPq. The project involves more than 24 institutions and 30 researchers with and without grants from all geographical regions of Brazil and has been important for monitoring emerging viruses in animals such as Mpox, the avian influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2. The laboratory also carries out research into parasitic diseases, with an emphasis on leishmaniasis and hemoparasitosis. In addition, it offers technical assistance to the external community through diagnostic tests for infectious and parasitic diseases affecting domestic and wild animals. The laboratory also provides expert advice on epidemiology, diagnostic techniques, pathogenesis and the development of vaccines for infectious and parasitic diseases.
