Laboratory of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

The Laboratory of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (LEB) is dedicated to projects associated with the surveillance and monitoring of diseases in domestic and wild animals. It was created in 1997 and currently has six collaborating professors. It works in close partnership with official veterinary services, public health professionals and the environment.

For more than 27 years, the LEB has collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture and state veterinary services to improve and evaluate animal health programs. Recently, in association with ESALQ and UnB, it became a collaborating center of the World Organization for Animal Health.

At the same time, it has been working with environmental agencies, in association with public health institutions, to develop projects that assess the spread of pathogens at the interface between the rural and wild environments.

The research projects developed in the laboratory are associated with the design and evaluation of epidemiological surveillance systems for animal diseases, aimed at understanding the dynamics of pathogens in these populations, with a view to assessing and mitigating risks to human and animal health, as well as developing strategies for the early detection of diseases for preparedness and response.

The techniques used involve traditional epidemiological studies, time-series analysis, mathematical modeling, the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence, geoprocessing, complex network analysis, the development of computational tools to support epidemiological surveillance, surveys of wild and domestic animal populations, among others.
